Pilates Mats are generally thicker than yoga mats as more cushioning is required for the spine and the knees than in yoga. Pilates mats start from 10mm thick and go up to 15mm thick for ultimate comfort vs 1.5mm to 6mm for a yoga mat. In addition Pilates mats are not sticky like yoga mats so that you can move around more freely.
Portability is often an issue with thick Pilates mats and hence shorter mats or even folding mats are often used for ease of carrying.
